The project One Step at a Time was developed with the mandate to redesign a triplex into student housing conceived with an ecological and sustainable approach. It is located in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, near the university district, including the Université de Montréal. Designed to meet the needs of a generation of students with active and socially engaged lifestyles, the project specifically targets a growing community: rock climbing enthusiasts. Since climbing's official debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020, the sport has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity.
Inspired by the world of climbing, blending the colorful, energetic atmosphere of indoor climbing gyms with the raw beauty of the natural cliffs where the sport originated, this project celebrates a practice that goes far beyond athletic performance. Climbing embodies a lifestyle built on trust between climbers, self-improvement, solidarity, and respect for the environment. As such, the main ecological strategy adopted in the project relies on the reuse of worn climbing equipment, such as ropes, carabiners, holds, and mats, which have been transformed into unique, meaningful furniture. Ultimately, by reusing, building, and inhabiting differently, we move collectively toward a more sustainable future, one step at a time.
